Elizabeth “Bus” Baker is a self-taught mixed media artist specializing in acrylics, stained glass, and metal works. Inspired by the bold and often whimsical styles of artists like Lori Mirabelli, Danny Gretscher, Willem de Kooning, and Friedensreich Hundtwasser; her creations reflect a playful interpretation of midcentury style.
As a child, Elizabeth was inspired by her grandfather’s stained-glass windows and the way sunlight cast colorful shadow panes on the floor of her childhood home. This experience influenced her artistic vision, inspiring her to capture the effects of light and color in her paintings.
In her current series of paintings, “Building Blocks,” Elizabeth explores the interplay of light and color through generous layers, bold gestures, and organic shapes with colors reminiscent of midcentury children’s illustrations by Bernice Myers, Mary Blair, Art Seiden, Alice and Martin Provensen, Evaline Ness and others. In her series of metal works, she uses scrap metal and wood construction materials to create fun and imaginative pieces.
